Website Performance Fundamentals for Business Owners
Why speed matters, what actually slows websites down and the practical steps that make the biggest difference.
A slow website frustrates visitors, especially on mobile connections, and speed is one of the signals search engines consider. You don’t need to be technical to understand the main causes of a slow site or the fixes that matter most.
How performance is measured
Google’s Core Web Vitals are a widely used set of measurements focused on real user experience:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how quickly the main content appears.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the layout jumps around while loading.
Free tools such as PageSpeed Insights report these measurements and suggest improvements. Treat the score as a guide, and pay most attention to how the site feels on a real phone.
Images are usually the biggest win
Large, uncompressed images are the most common cause of slow pages. Serve images at the size they are displayed, use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, and load images further down the page only when they are needed.
Watch third-party scripts
Chat widgets, tracking tools, pop-ups and app scripts all add work for the browser. Each one may be small, but together they can make a page sluggish. Keep only the tools you actively use.
Be careful with fonts and animation
Several font families and weights add to load time. Choose a small set and load them efficiently. Animation should be lightweight and must never delay people from reading or using the page.
Stop the layout from jumping
Layout shift happens when images, banners or embeds load without reserved space and push content down. Giving media fixed dimensions or aspect ratios prevents it.
Hosting and caching
Good hosting, caching and a content delivery network help pages reach visitors quickly, wherever they are. On hosted platforms such as Shopify, this is handled for you; on WordPress, the hosting choice and caching setup matter more.
